  22. If I may point out, my understanding is that NekoTech is no longer in the 
  23. Alpha business and no, Deskstation is not shipping, nor do they have a 
  24. functional Alpha Raptor 3s.

  42. It varies greatly depending on the system and configuration. I know NekoTech
  43. makes a low cost 233MHz system that starts at under $5K. For the 275MHz
  44. systems, they are all roughly close, give or take a few hundred here or 
  45. there.
  46. The config will have a big impact. My system has 64MB (the minimum I'd
  47. reccommend for complex work) and that memory alone will set ya back $2K.
  48. This is another reason that the Pentium is not as cost effect as the Alpha.
  49. When ya tack on the memory cost, that cheap Pentium isn't as cheap anymore.

  54. The Raptor 3 is an interesting machine in that it allows you to choose from
  55. a variety of high speed processors, including the forthcoming DEC 21164.
  56. This flexibility makes the system a little more expensive, but could be an
  57. attractive option for someone who plans to go with one cpu now and change or
  58. upgrade to another later. However, I don't think they are shipping yet (but 
  59. I
  60. could be mistaken).

  64. Currently, Alpha systems are definitely the price performance leader. But I
  65. think
  66. its a shame that IBM is so completely messed up that they can't get their 
  67. act
  68. together with the PowerPC. The 604 and 620 are two of the nicer parts I've
  69. seen
  70. in a while but it could be some time before a commonly available standard
  71. machine is built with them. They should be competing with the Alpha today 
  72. and
  73. they are not.
